Summer in Israel...

Update 8/7: It's been a while since we've added pictures here.  It's not that we haven't taken them.  So to make up for it, we have more than the usual batch below.  Summer is going well.  Luke had an extra month of school (in July) but now he and Mark are back to all-day every-day together.  Sometimes that goes well :-).  Bethany has learned to be forceful to get her way and she's not afraid to take charge.  Katie is moving around a bit more, but not yet rolling over.  Some of our summer activities are pictured below.  Not pictured: most recent camping trip, days of mind-numbing jackhammering under our house, boys' computer games, Bethany's toilet seat, Kelli and Todd's projects.

As you can see from the photo at right, Luke lost his "first" tooth earlier this month.  One came out when he was 2 after a fall, so this was the first to come out naturally.  No we don't have it.  Luke was out playing and it fell out.  Later Kelli noticed it was missing but Luke hadn't said a word.  Mark's attempts to locate it were a failure.

This is summer at the Bolen house:  Luke builds a "house;"  the kids all lay down on the floor for a picture.

Mark gets industrious and cleans out (thoroughly!) the gutter in front of our house.  ALWAYS the boys are asking dad to take them on a bike ride.

Everyone loves to get right in Katie's face and make her smile.  Mark likes to sit at the table and work on his workbook or some other craft.

Bethany has got the number puzzle down.  Mark likes to help anyone anytime he can.

We went to the zoo.  Advice: skip the zoo on a pleasant August evening in Jerusalem.  But here's something: where else could you go to the zoo in the summer and not see anyone else (adult) wearing shorts.  And with four kids, we had the least of any of the families.

Mark likes the elephants.  And the giraffes and monkeys and ibex.

Everyone loves going swimming, though the pool is getting smaller (or the kids bigger!).

We had a picnic with our friends.  Put us all together and you have more kids than parents.

For fun sometimes in the evening the kids go play on the ancient synagogue.  Can't do that in California. :-)

Both Mark and Luke like to push Katie around in our (new) stroller.

One day there was a human chain (from Gaza to Jerusalem) that passed by on the freeway near our house.  So we went for a ride.  A long ride.

This is a familiar scene - working on something or another at the kitchen table.

This is another familiar scene.  But she's sleeping less than she used to.
