It's always been clear that the Israelites "wandered" in the Wilderness of Paran south of Kadesh Barnea for 40 years.  So it's been my practice of late to focus students' attention on the wilderness travels on our drive through this area.  One thing that's always been missing is any kind of visual aid of the tabernacle.  This summer the Southern Baptists built a careful life-size model of the Tabernacle at Timna Park near Eilat.  It's a good location and a great model!  Here's what you're missing :-).

The Tabernacle was erected at the base of "Solomon's Pillars" very near where we know for certain that the Israelites traveled. Outside the "holy place" (the covered part) was the horned sacrificial altar, covered with bronze.

The laver, used for washing, is only briefly described in Scripture, so we don't even know its dimensions. Inside the "holy place," where only certain priests were allowed, was the altar of incense.

The table of showbread and the candelabra were the two other items in the "holy place."  One of the priests stands nearby.

The high priest was dressed in a special garb, including the breastplate with the special stones.  He stands here next to the curtain separating the "holy of holies" from the "holy place." Only the high priest was allowed in the "holy of holies," and then only one time a year (the Day of Atonement/Yom Kippur)!  Inside this was the ark of the covenant.

Inside the ark of the covenant were reminders of God's provision for his people: the tablets on which the 10 commandments were written, the pot of manna and the rod of Aaron that budded.
