Will help students of Scripture see Malachi in a new light
“The artefacts and artistry of the ancient world form one of the best commentaries on the biblical text, but most Bible readers are unaware of Scripture’s ancient cultural context. The work presented by Dr. Bolen admirably addresses this need. The following collection of photos is clearly explained and will help students of Scripture see Malachi (and all the prophets) in a new light.”
—Eric Ortlund, Lecturer in Old Testament and Biblical Hebrew, Oak Hill College; author of author of “Malachi” in the ESV Expository Commentary
Mission accomplished for Malachi!
“The Photo Companion to the Bible is designed to illustrate and elucidate the biblical text using an array of visual resources to supplement traditional biblical commentaries. Mission accomplished for Malachi!
A sampler includes:
- a trilingual inscription proclaiming Xerxes as ‘the great king,’ a title rightfully belonging to the God of Israel (Mal 1:11,14);
- a photo montage accenting the importance of the Hebrew priesthood in the life of ancient Israel (Mal 2:1-9);
- remains of ancient smelting workshops and depictions of metalworking processes behind the portrayal of ‘God the refiner’ (Mal. 3:2-4);
- the prophet’s understanding of YHWH as the true ‘sun of righteousness’ reflected in the icons of winged sun disks from the ancient world (Mal 4:2).
The Photo Companion to the Bible is a most welcome addition to the study of the book of Malachi and its importance in the wider narrative of God’s story.”
—Andrew E. Hill, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies, Wheaton College and Graduate School; author of Malachi in the Anchor Bible series
